Feminist Voices from Sierra Leone

Feminism: Voices from Sierra Leone

The compilation captures the unfiltered voices of feminists in Sierra Leone as they share their stories of being feminists in Sierra Leone. It is a compilation of their voices in words that look at gender inequality, sexism, gender stereotype etc.  It provides an opportunity for contributors to share their lived experiences, thoughts and views and to have them acknowledged.

OUR VISION

We envision a world where the dignity, rights, and opportunities of everyone are not constrained by their gender.

OUR BELIEf

We believe that everyone, should have equal rights and opportunities to thrive. We believe everyone should be feminist for a better world.

THE PROBLEM

Sierra Leone is currently grappling with a feminist revolution challenging normative practices and facing cultural pushbacks. Despite constituting more than 52% of the population, women in the country encounter systematic disadvantages rooted in patriarchy and structural violence. They are notably underrepresented in leadership roles, and existing laws and policies frequently limit their autonomy over their own bodies. This challenging environment hinders the pursuit of aspirations for women and girls, despite ongoing efforts by feminist movements over the years.

A FEMINIST MOVEMENT

Feminists United Sierra Leone and Allies (FUSLA) is a social movement of young Sierra Leoneans with the collective goal of inspiring equality. We aim to achieve a society that makes gender equality and empowerment central. The movement consists of social change actors who recognize the vast gender inequality in Sierra Leone. As a revolutionary movement, FUSLA has sparked conversations around feminism in Sierra Leone through social-media sensitizations highlighting sexism and its enduring hindrance to equality. Psychosocial support and mental health awareness are integral to our work and we seek to target community stakeholders as well as parents in relation to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). We also aim to create a safe platform for victims to freely speak up and share their experiences within communities in the Western Area of Sierra Leone. We believe that every both men and woman should have equal rights and opportunities to thrive and therefore must be accorded.

We are thrilled to unveil the next chapter in our journey—Volume II of the Feminist Voices from Sierra Leone anthology. This groundbreaking project continues to spotlight the vibrant narratives and experiences of Sierra Leonean feminists. Following the success of Volume I, which beautifully captured the essence of feminism in Sierra Leone, we're now on the lookout for fresh contributions to fill the narrative gap in Sierra Leonean feminist literature.

Join us in amplifying these empowering voices and stories.
